Isn’t every day earth day?

Supporters from all across the country joined hip hop legend DJ Biz Markie to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day by recording a clean energy remix of his classic song,Just a Friend — and some of our staff couldn’t resist either!

With our planet facing a generational challenge and our leaders falling far short in their response to the urgency of the climate crisis, its easy to succumb to doom and gloom. But each of us came to this movement because of the passion we find in working together to build a sustainable future for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren.

Jim Fallon: Exploring the mind of a killer

Psychopathic killers are the basis for some must-watch TV, but what really makes them tick? Neuroscientist Jim Fallon talks about brain scans and genetic analysis that may uncover the rotten wiring in the nature (and nurture) of murderers. In a too-strange-for-fiction twist, he shares a fascinating family history that makes his work chillingly personal.

About Jim Fallon

Sloan Scholar, Fulbright Fellow, Professor Emeritus of Neuroscience, Jim Fallon looks at the way nature and nurture intermingle to wire up the human brain.

Stefan Wolff: The path to ending ethnic conflicts

Civil wars and ethnic conflicts have brought the world incredible suffering, but Stefan Wolff’s figures show that, in the last 20 years, their number has steadily decreased. He extracts critical lessons from Northern Ireland, Liberia, Timor and more to show that leadership, diplomacy and institutional design are our three most effective weapons in waging peace.

About Stefan Wolff

Stefan Wolff studies contemporary conflicts, focusing on the prevention and settlement of ethnic conflicts and in postconflict reconstruction in deeply divided and war-torn societies.

Formula 1 news!

Green machine: The grounds of the Williams F1 headquarters in Didcot feature this hedge has been trimmed into the shape of a Formula 1 car These spectacular hedges cut like a Formula1 car and pit lane mechanics will set the hearts of any motoring fan racing.

Gardeners at the Williams F1 headquarters spend hours every month trimming their topiary – which is positioned in a gravel trap.

The 11ft long car is made from six plants and each 6ft high mechanic is made from two.

Visitors to the HQ in Grove, near Didcot, Oxfordshire, are stunned by the work, which shows the mechanics changing the car’s wheels during a pit stop.

An Italian nursery made the model for Ferrari but Williams bought it and had the shape of the car changed to reflect their own car design.

It took two-and-a-half years for the plants to weave around their metal frames and they are now completely covered.

Tim Lightfoot, facilities manager at Williams, said visitors were always impressed by the work.

He said: ‘Our gardeners trim the plants into shape by hand and take a great deal of care doing it.

‘It is hard work but the result is really impressive.

‘The topiary has pride of place outside our conference centre and is popular with the many people who visit us each year.

‘Many guests are shocked by the size of it.

‘We often have people trying to sit in it but it’s not a very comfortable drive. It doesn’t go very fast either.’

Williams-Toyota are currently sixth in the Formula1 constructors’ championship on 30.5 points.

Driver Nico Rosberg has secured all their points and lies in sixth place in the drivers’ championship. Kazuki Nakajima is yet to score this season.

What would happen if not the fastest but the greenest car would win the Formula 1?
